WAKAN NAGI CANUPA
Some say that every art project is a journey, and every artist takes a different path. This is so true of Sylvia Woodhull Michaelsen. Her journey came to her in a night vision while she slept. This is especially true of this particular piece of art. It is her rendering of that vision, sketching it the following morning and painting it on canvas a bit later.Â
This painting has been named in the Lakota language as, “Wakan Nagi Canupa (translation in English is Sacred Spirit Pipe).” The pipe is quite similar in configuration to the sacred pipe share carries.Â
A Medicine Wheel behind the pipe, along with the patterns and colors of her vision (including other configurations), you can see that Sylvia’s rich Native American lineage appears (as discovered some years ago by a role-writer named Paul Brill who was employed by the Omaha Nation and other Plains Native American Nations to track ancestry.
The colors of the Medicine Wheel are representing the Four Directions. Black is west, red is north, yellow is east, and white is south. Blue is the sky (Wakan Tanka) and green is Mother Earth (Unci Maka).
The Medicine Wheel also depicts the 4 great races of people who inhabit the earth.Â
Sylvia, being a sacred pipe carrier and Sundancer, has assisted a number of spiritual healers and interpreters in traditional Native American ceremonies. A special thanks to Paul Brill for his work on Sylvia’s lineage, which we know includes Omaha, Dakota, Ho-Chunk Winnebago, Ponca, Pawnee, and a sprinkling of French.Â
I am Sylvia’s husband, and I consider my wife a gifted spiritual woman. I am determined to support all of her endeavors any way that I can.Â
We have history together since 1981, and we strive to do the best we can to help others who wish to participate in this journey of spiritual living.Â
Thank you for visiting my wife’s website, and please let us know if we can ever design something special for you or as a gift to give to someone you love and/or care about.Â
